US4643913: Process for Producing Solar Cells

This patent is for a procedure that can create solar cells in belt furnaces and allows low contact resistance between silver paste and a silicon substrate. After an anti-reflection coating is placed on one side of a silicon base plate, Ag paste is then applied on top of the coating. The plate then undergoes heat treatment inside of a belt furnace to seal the anti-reflection exterior, at temperatures between 400° to 900° C. It has been observed that temperatures lower than 400° C. do not allow the organic elements in the anti-reflective coating and Ag paste to properly decompose, while exceeding 900° C can cause leakage, due to Ag nearing its melting point. After this process is complete, the solar cell can be prepared for use in a photovoltaic system.
